HALLOWEEN 2011

Halloween for us this year started on Saturday October 29th, at our ward Trunk-or-Treat

We'd had CJ and Mattie's costumes for about a month, so they were so excited to finally get to wear them. Mattie was a cupcake, and CJ was a cheeseburger, if you can't tell

Powell's first Halloween costume was a hot dog, staying with the theme

Bryce and Paige were pretty proud of what they'd "cooked" up ;)

Then we headed over to Seattle Sunday evening to spend Halloween with Bryce's parents. Bryce had a two day CLE (continuing legal education) in downtown Seattle on the 31st and the 1st, so it was a great reason for the kids to get to go trick-or-treating for the first time in a great neighborhood. And what made it better was that they got to go with their cousins and grandparents

It only took a couple of houses for CJ to get the hang of it and soon he was running from house to house, and at each door saying, in one sentence, "Trick or treat thank you." :) We had to practically hold him back to keep him with everyone. This wasn't Reese's first time so she knew exactly what she was doing too. Mattie and Zack, on the other hand, were a little slower. It didn't help that Mattie kept tripping. After falling a couple of times, she started to tell us at every house that she was ok, she didn't fall, just so we knew she was ok (even though we were with her the entire time :)

Mattie's face sums up what every kid feels on Halloween

Powell was nice and cozy in his hot dog costume and spent the entire time either being held by someone or bundled up in the stroller

At one point Mattie, who is totally scared of spiders (and has an aversion to most bugs in general), got stuck on this porch and had to be rescued because of that "spider." She was crying and wouldn't move :)

CJ looks super cute in this picture, but can you tell what he's doing? That's right - at one of the last houses, CJ made it obvious that he had to go. Maybe we shouldn't show this, but Mommy thought it was funny that Daddy took CJ behind the bushes  to relieve himself (and there just happened to be a storm drain). Good thing it was dark outside :)

Mattie almost made it to the end, but gave up a few houses before we finished (yet somehow she ended up with more candy than CJ. Must have been those fistfuls she was taking at the doors :)

Since we didn't have time on Halloween, the next day Gramma and Papa made homemade root beer for the kids

And finally, since CJ's preschool class of five was missing three kids on Halloween, they postponed their party to Wednesday, November 2nd
CJ brought spider Rice Krispy treats to share with his class

And got to wear his cheeseburger costume one more time

Happy Halloween!

I LOVE the Halloween costumes. That is the best family Halloween costume ever. You are so creative! I wish we were coming to Utah for Thanksgiving. I am so sad to miss you! We are coming for Christmas this year. Darn, I thought we were on the same schedule and was looking forward to seeing you this year. I'm bummed. Hopefully we'll see you again soon.

Here is the bread recipe. I hope it turns out well for you. I'm not saying it's better than other recipes. I've just found that it works for me and I think it tastes good:

Em’s Wheat Bread:

6 cups whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon rapid rise yeast
1/4 cup high gluten flour
500 mg. Vitamin C
3 cups very warm water
4 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons honey or brown sugar (I prefer brown sugar – it’s less expensive)
2 teaspoons of salt

Mix 3 cups wheat flour with gluten and yeast. Add vitamin C (I just crush half of a 1000 mg tablet. It helps the yeast grow better) and warm water; mix 1 minute. Cover bowl and let sponge 10 minutes.

Add oil, honey or sugar, and salt. Quickly add remaining flour one cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and cleans from the sides of bowl. Knead 7-10 minutes (I use my kitchen aid mixer but have done it by hand lots of times. I usually have to use more than 6 cups of flour if kneading by hand). Roll into 2 or 3 loaves (depending on pan size – I have two huge pans that I use. The recipe would fit easily into three medium size pans, too). Preheat oven to 200 degrees and put in the loaves. Rise dough in oven until double, 20 - 30 minutes (you can also just rise the loaves on the counter if you have time – usually takes about an hour). Leave in oven. Turn heat to 350 degrees and bake for 25 minutes. Remove from pans to cool. Coat with butter.

I love you!
